According to the definition of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (I.U.C.N.) a Protected Area “is a portion of land and/or sea, specially devoted to the protection and maintenance of biological diversity, as well as of natural resources and related cultural resources and managed through legal means or other effective means”

The recently defined management categories are six (6), although most of the countries or regions have not adapted the local denomination to these categories:

1b. Wilderness Area
2. National Park
3. Natural Monument
4. Habitat/Species Management Area
