According
to the definition of the International Union for the
Conservation of Nature (I.U.C.N.) a Protected Area “is
a portion of land and/or sea, specially devoted to the
protection and maintenance of biological diversity,
as well as of natural resources and related cultural
resources and managed through legal means or other effective
means”
The recently defined
management categories are six (6), although most of
the countries or regions have not adapted the local
denomination to these categories:
1a. Strict Nature Reserve
1b. Wilderness Area
2. National Park
3. Natural Monument
4. Habitat/Species Management Area
5. Protected Landscape/Seascape
6. Managed Resource Protected Area
